On Aug.1st 1976 Trinidad and Tobago gained its Independence from great Britain remaining with the common wealth becoming a stable democracy enjoying the highest standard of living in the Caribbean.

On 1 August 1838 freedom was given to the slaves. In both Trinidad and Tobago, many of the former slaves moved off the plantations. They did not want any reminders of their former masters. They set up villages close to the sugar estates, but not on the planters' land.

In 1608 James the 1st claimed sovereignty over Tobago and over the course of 200 years Tobago got passed between the french, Dutch and English anywhere from 22-32 times.
